Ben
Franklin and Electricity
The person who flied the kite in the
history of science for discovering the charges which constitutes electricity
was BEN FRANKILIN. His complete name was BENJMIN FRANKLIN, he was the leader
and also among the fathers of the United States.
He was political theorist, politician, postmaster, scientist, diplomat, leading author and much more. Ben Franklin was born on January 17, 1706 in Milk Street in Boston. His remembrance in science mainly in physics was because of his theories and discoveries regarding physics.

Franklin was a prodigious inventor.
His many creations were the Franklin stove, bifocal glasses, lightning rod,
glass armonica, and urinary catheter. His discoveries were the result of his
intense liking in the field of electricity and by his investigations. He stated
that “vitreous” and “resinous” were the same electrical fluid under different
pressures, they were not considered to be different. He was the very first in
discovering the principal of quantization of charge, and also first in labeling
them as positive and negative.
In 1750 he published a proposal for an experiment to highlight the connection
between the lightning and electricity, which he proved by flying a kite in a
storm extracting sparks from a cloud but his experiment was not written up with
credit. As some point it out that if Franklin has proceeded as he stated, he
would have been killed. Franklin itself indicates in his writings that he was
aware of dangerous and he offered alternatives to demonstrate that lightning
was electrical. Franklin did this experiment but in the way other than what is
described. Instead he used the kite for collecting electric charges from cloud
and implied that lightning is electrical in nature. Even Franklin had sent the
directions to England when they were re-experimenting.
We wonders about the nature and power
of lightning and sometimes we used to gazed sky at the time of thunder, got
scared by the voice of thunder and lightning. But Franklin’s interest was much
in peak, then thunders soar. Once he
received an electricity tube from his friend he began to play around and
performing experiment. Franklin suspected that lightning was an electrical in
nature and he wanted to know more about it whether he is right and to prove
this he performed kite experiment. By this many of the terms were developed
that we still used today when we talk
about electricity, conductor, charge, electric shock etc. Also his experiment
in the electricity led to the invention of lightning rod. Franklin was always
looking for a something new about electricity, as it was one of his favorite
past times.
AS electricity was a hobby for Franklin he
made many important contributions, which lateral help scientists like Michel
Faraday, Thomas A. Edison to study the topic. Even today scientists are more
learning about it. Other than his work
on electricity he also received Royal Society’s Copley Medal in 1753, and after
3 years he became one of his few 18th Century Americans to be elected for society. Moreover the CGS
unit of electric charge has been named after him. As electricity has renamed
the world, If Ben would be in this century he would definitely be amazed at how
important was his stormy kite flight.
