The biggest hunt on the hidden particle came to an end on July 4; it was the Eureka moment for the team of scientists and engineers, who were investigating for the particle. Man who stated about the particle 48 years was on cloud nine ! because of this breakthrough discovery. Peter Higgs states “I never expected this to happen in my lifetime and shall be asking my family to put some champagne in the fridge”.![]() |

Why Boson attracted so much attention of scientists (both experimental and theorists) all over the world??
Since from the dawn, man is eager to understand nature and
his surroundings. His thirst for this knowledge took him high in the Cosmos. With
the advancement in understanding and to explain the universe and the forces, a
standard Model was presented which explain the basic building block of the
universe and the forces acting in the universe. This model predicted the
particles which all were discovered, but Higgs was the last missing piece of
the standard model. Standard Model says that the universe is made up of 12
fundamental particles and 4 fundamental forces. One another particle was
predicted by Higgs, Brout and Englert in 1964. It explains the most important
property of all matter- mass, and was called the Higgs Bosons. Finding the
Higgs Boson would validate the standard model of the physics.
What magic does Higgs do??
In 1964, Higgs Boson came into theoretical picture having
responsibility of giving mass to other particles and without Higgs there would
be no gravity and no universe, physicist say all elementary forms of matter would zoom around at the speed of light, there would be neither atoms nor life. This theoretical concept is to be confirmed
through experiment, which was carried in world biggest particle physics lab at
CERN (European Center of Nuclear Research) back in 2008.
Higgs Boson is supposed to have originated in a trillionth
of second after big bang created the universe. Scientists tried to recreate the
same conditions presumed to have existed there by making very high speed proton
collisions. Where 2 proton beams collide at the rate of 40 million hits per
second. Protons are accelerated at 99.9999999% of the speed of light. Quarks
which are present inside the proton are held together by massive gluons collide
and explode with enough energy to create the Higgs particle.
This Higgs particle has the 100 to 200 times the mass of the proton, but its validity last less than a millionth of a billionth of a billionth of a second before going to decay in the spray of other particles. The evidence of Higgs comes out to be from telltale spirals and from streaks left in L.H.C detectors by the particles created. Tracking millions of collisions occurring in seconds, they identified never before seen particle. The Higgs comes out to be like DNA of physics as it filled the gap of standard model of the physics describing matter and fundamental forces of nature. The results presented were “five sigma” i.e. there were just a 0.00006% of a chance the two laboratories (ATLAS & CMS) at LHC found is a mathematical quirk. With this breakthrough discovery, scientist can now peep into other areas of universe with more surety.

Higgs Boson is the last piece of Cake (physics).
Discovery of Higgs Boson would act like a nitro booster for the
physics, this discovery has opened a new paragraph in the understanding the
universe. The biggest achievement of this discovery is that it confirms the
validity of Standard model of the universe. The other aspects of the sub-atomic
physics and the universe are yet unexplained like dark matter (25% of the matter in
the universe), dark energy which makes up the 70% matter in the universe,
antimatter, supersymmetry (SUSY) etc. with this new member in the physics all physicists
are set up for new voyage across Cosmos to understand this great Intelligent Design which has many secrets hidden in, to unveil them for better
understanding, after all Human is born with the thirst, and this thirst doesn't need water but knowledge, which has no limits. But for now it’s the Eureka
moment for physicists around the world.
